Is a violin with a one-piece back better than one with a two-piece back?

Q: I have been shopping for a new violin, and some have been touted as better because they have a one-piece back. Is this correct?

A: Aesthetically, yes. There is no doubt that a beautiful single piece of maple, especially figured maple, is a beautiful sight.

As far as playing, no. there is no difference. Choose your violin by the sound you want and the price -- not by looks.
