What size violin (viola, cello, bass) should I buy?
This is a difficult question to answer without seeing
you in person. But maybe I can clear up a few misconceptions, since we see customers all the time who have been
told to get a certain size of instrument -- and it is the wrong size!
Instruments for Adults
First off, if you are an adult, then you will play on
a full-size instrument. For a violin or cello, this means 4/4. Those are the easy
ones.
On viola, there will be different
sizes, indicated in inches. So even if you are an adult player, there are different options. You might play a 15-1/2, 16 or even 17" viola.
The current trend is for violists to use the biggest
size that they can handle. Being a health-conscious private teacher, I disagree. If you have to stretch, you will
eventually have problems with your hands. So find the biggest one that you can use, then consider going 1/2 inch
smaller.
The double bass, or upright
bass is another one that's tricky. Very few adults play on a full-size bass; instead, they use a 3/4. That
is because it is easier to play; the scale length is a little shorter, the body is smaller, and - it fits
better into your car.
If you insist on a full size or 4/4 bass, there is
really no advantage. You'll have a harder time playing it, carrying it and storing it.
The scale length on a 3/4 is about 41 inches; if you
like, before buying your bass construct a 41" cardboard "instrument and see if you really want anything longer.
